Collaboration with corporations and other universities centered on Tohoku University

Until now, COI Tohoku Site has utilized university research bases to concentrate the efforts of multiple industries and progress advanced endeavors. We work together with Tohoku University at the base, as well as strengthening connections with participating corporations that perform advanced activities in each industry. In addition, our satellite organizations, Waseda University and Tohoku Gakuin University, have their own individual strengths. We have been working together to construct a sustainable innovation platform.

Working to actualize "Measure," "Recognize", and "Actuate"

For example, we define "Measure" (assessing, timing, and weighing) as technologies required for achieving COI Tohoku Site's vision, including sensor technologies for actualizing unobtrusive sensing (contactless sensors, contact sensors, ingestible sensors, biological balance sensors, oral bacteria sensors, etc.), battery-based technologies, and communication-based technologies. And we define "Recognize" (ascertaining, knowing, and comprehending) as PDS platform and big data analysis, technologies relating to the indices for evaluation/analysis/prediction of individuals' health conditions (genetic factors, environmental factors, lifestyle factors), and research related to sensing and genomes. We also define "Actuate" (imparting self-help and providing mutual assistance) as at-home dietary management, infrastructures for actualizing innovation, and communication robots.

Furthermore, we screen these technologies to promote core technology development, sub-technological development, service development, and business model development, which are expected to expand into products and services that directly connect to the actualization of our vision for the future. In addition, movements are also underway to expand the "OMOIYARI AI" platform (currently in the process for trademark registration), which will lead to behavior modification through the "compassionate interaction" of artificial intelligence (AI).

Connecting multiple projects for effective research and development

The system utilizes a matrix project structure which incorporates a matrix research and development viewpoint for corporations, and advances research and development in as close a form as possible to "research and development through industry-academia collaborations that removes obstacles in existing fields and organizations, and strives toward practical application from basic research stages." "Vertical division projects" that mainly concern individual service/product development and "horizontal division projects" that mainly concern basic research/development relating to the overall project as well as horizontal research/development are formed. These projects are linked together with specific research and development issues to work on research and development activities.

Connect with the medical field to construct an even stronger organization

To further accelerate medical-engineering collaboration, we have prepared an environment in which the leaders of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and the Tohoku University Hospital can act as deputy research leaders (deputy RL), and are actively collaborating with medical sites. In addition, in order to promote future strategic activities across the site as a whole, we have appointed a senior university research administrator (Senior URA) as strategy leader. Please look forward to the future of COI Tohoku Site as we continue to grow livelier and make progress.
